The photo collection of the City Archives gives a fascinating view of the history of Frederikshavn. In this article we give our readers a small sample of the vast amount of photographic evidence of town history we have; of the tough fishermen of the Fiskerklyngen, the town's last police officer to beat the drum during rounds and the church of Frederikshavn when it was first opened.

Living History

While rummaging through the Borough of Frederikshavn archives we unearthed five boxes of letters from the poor-law authorities, dating back to 1814-1880. These letters bring many remarkable lives and destinies back to life, so we have decided to publish them here, along with the transscripts of Grete Hjort. This collection will be updated regularly.

Come see the City Archives of Frederikshavn

We find many interesting documents in the Archives. Often, we find ourselves asking: Did you know that?
 One of these finds was:

  • The municipality merger in 1970 (Danish)
On April 1, 1970 a great deal of municipalities were merged into the somewhat larger local districts. Thence arose the major municipalities of: Frederikshavn, Skagen (the Skaw) and Sæby.
